Picture book guide

Best picture books for toddlers who say no

No to shoes, no to the bath, no to leaving the park. The no stage is often about power: a child who wants a say in their own day. A no is often a child who wants to be heard. These books show characters who push back and grown-ups who stay kind and keep the limit, so you can talk about it later, when nobody is in a hurry.

How to use these books

  1. 1

    Offer two yeses

Instead of "Bath now", try "Do you want to hop or march to the bath?" Both choices lead where you need to go.

  2. 2

Name what you see first, then wait

"You shook your head. Something feels hard." Then wait five seconds. It often opens the door to the real reason.

  3. 3

Give a job instead of an order

"Can you be the one who presses the lift button?" Many children say yes to a role faster than to a rule.

  4. 4

Keep the limit, keep it kind

"You don't want to leave. We are still going. Do you want to hold my hand or ride on my back?"

  5. 5

    Use the book afterwards

When everyone is calm, point at the character who says no and ask: "Why do you think he said no?" Then listen.

Questions parents ask

What's a good picture book for a child in the no phase?

Look for a short story where a character says no and the grown-up stays kind. No, David! and Llama Llama Mad at Mama are two well-known examples.

How do I avoid a power struggle over every no?

Offer two choices you are happy with, like red cup or blue cup. A small choice often matters more to a child than the thing itself.

Can I keep limits and still be gentle?

Yes. Say the limit calmly, name the feeling, and keep the limit. You can be kind and clear at the same time.

My 3 year old says no to everything. Is that normal?

Yes. Saying no is a common way for young children to show they have their own will. Most books on this list work well from about 3; check the age in the table.

Why is Amor and the Great Big NO! on this list?

It is our own book, for children aged 3-8, about a big NO at the dinner table. We include it once and mark it clearly.
